MOMENT WITH HONEYTONGUE
Can we meet you?
My name is Temitope a.k.a. Honeytongue
What is your educational background?
I did my primary and secondary school here in Lagos. Studied AGRONOMY in LAUTECH, Ogbomoso Oyo state.
Why stand up comedy? Was it what you wanted or your path crossed?
Well, standup comedy found me. My pastor saw it in me and since 2005 I have been threading that path but that is one of the things I do. I also sing and act as well.
Can you say your decision to be a comedian paid off?
Oh Yes. I got married with comedy money. Have a house through comedy money. Have a car through comedy money... Abba, God has been faithful.
Does comedy have any contribution to nation building?
Yes it does. People take comedians seriously than politicians because of the way we say the truth. it's just laced with humor but it's the truth. People tend to ruminate over few of the jokes and amend their ways if possible.
At what point does one become a comedian?
At any point you know you can make people laugh professionally.
What was your worst performance? If there was any?
I cannot remember though. I see every step in this path as a stepping stone to getting better.
What do people say about your content?
So far so good, I have followers who love what I do and whenever they are displeased I still get their feedback as well but that doesn't mean they don't like me it's just for me to get better at what I do.
What was that particular statement someone said after your performer that made you feel good about yourself and what you do?
One man said YOU ARE ORIGINAL.
What other things do you do aside being a stand up comedian?
ACTING, singing and I have a band THE HONEYTONGUE BAND.
It is said that comedians are catching in big in the entertainment industry? What is your take on this?
It's the comedian that probably has been doing it for a long time and who knows what he is doing. Not every comedian is.
Does being a comedian come with extra ingenuity not written in the 'Book of Comedy', if there is anything like that?
Well, YES but it's just like any other gift aside comedy. It is purely a gift from God being worked on on a daily basis.
Where do you see comedy in the nearest future?
Competing on the world scale cos we are gradually getting there.
What impact, positive or negative has the pandemic had on your craft?
Locked us at home with no way of making cash from event but also it made me as a person reflect on other ways to make money and dish out good contents.
Who are those comedians you look up to like role models?
A lot of them.
Prior to the pandemic, how many shows do you attend per week?
3-4 in a week sometimes.
If there was a portfolio as minister for Entertainment and you were appointed, what things will try to achieve given a short time frame?
Portraying Nigeria as a country investors can come into through the content we would be dishing out and also create a platform for entertainers on how they can manage their time and resources.
Do you get a suggestive attention actions from female audience?
Sure. It's now a norm.
Do you have a special programme say on YouTube that you anchor?
I have an annual live show at Muson Centre tagged HONEYTONGUE FUNNY BY NATURE.
We have done 4 editions. I am also on YouTube. I have a web series called MAMA LANDLADY.
How do you know your performance is getting a positive reaction from your audience?
When you hear them laughing then you are doing your job well.
Does being a comedian make you feel special in a kind of way?
Yes cos it's not easy making you all laugh especially with all that is going on.
What ways can government assist comedy and comedians in Nigeria?
Investing financially into the comedy industry.
